GRAND FORKS — In Grand Forks, youth homelessness is a prevalent but often unrealized issue in the community, said a school district social worker.

Sara Berg, Grand Forks Public Schools student and transition liaison, works directly with unhoused youth to support them inside and outside of the classroom. This can mean helping students get transportation to school, connecting them with free mental health resources, supplying them with clothes, food and medical care and assisting them with any other basic needs.

“There's a misconception in our community that (homelessness) doesn't exist for children,” she said.

Last school year, 168 students in the district were considered homeless. The year before, the number was 187. From 2018 to 2025 the number of homeless youth spanned anywhere from 80
