VALLEY CITY, N.D. — Layna Hoffer was the No. 1 runner for the Jamestown High School girls cross-country team on Saturday.

Hoffer, a junior for the Jays, posted her best race of the season at Valley City's Blue and White XC Invite. The junior crossed the line at 21:53 to finish first for the Jays and 42nd overall. As a team, the Blue Jay girls placed 11th out of 25 competing teams.

The Blue Jay boys were seventh out of 28 teams.

On Saturday, Hoffer was followed closely by first-year runner Marcella Maus. Maus earned a personal best time of 22:11.

Freshman Tristan Champagne led the Blue Jay boys again, finishing the 5K course in 18:28. Jaydyn Velek continued to improve, posting a time of 18:48 to place second for the Blue Jays. Dax Wick also finished below the 19 minute mark, crossing th
