Winston-Salem State lost a shootout with Virginia State on Saturday afternoon falling 34-33 on Bill Hayes Field at Bowman Gray Stadium.
The Trojans (2-1) scored on three straight possessions to start the second half and that was enough to pick up the win. The Rams (2-2, 0-1 CIAA) lost their conference opener. The win by the Trojans did not count in the conference standings because of the schedule format the league uses.
Defensive back Evan Powell had a big interception with eight minutes to go in the game and the Rams trailing by seven. The Rams marched down and got a 4-yard touchdown run by Noah Marshall, but kicker Gil Lorenzana pulled the extra-point attempt and the Rams trailed 34-33 with 5:55 left in the game.
“We can’t let happen today beat us next week,” Coach Robert Massey said.
