SOUTH BEND, Ind. (WNDU) - A new low-barrier homeless center in South Bend is set to break ground on Monday.

To jog your memory, the New Day Intake Center is part of South Bend’s initiative to end chronic homelessness in the city.

It’s been in the works for several years.

Officials say the 25,000 square-foot, permanent low-barrier shelter on Old Cleveland Road north of the airport will include:

30 single occupancy rooms and 45 double occupancy rooms for a total of 120 beds

Medical clinic space

On-site laundry facilities

Full-service kitchen and dining area

Spaces for mental health and addiction recovery support

Outdoor communal spaces and a chapel

Art workshop and indoor communal space

The groundbreaking will take place on Monday at 1 p.m.
