The City of Melville will investigate how it can help end period poverty despite concerns from councillors it is not a local government issue.

The council voted 8-1 at its July 15 meeting in favour of a proposal from deputy mayor Karen Wheatland that staff look at providing menstrual equity initiatives and report back by November and incorporate it into future planning and policies.

But the council earlier voted 7-2 for an amendment by Cr Jennifer Spanbroek to remove a statement affirming the city’s commitment to menstrual equality and acknowledging the work of organisations such as Share the Dignity.

It was then amended a second time to remove reference to Share the Dignity after councillors raised concerns it would exclude the city working with other groups.
