About 150 people attended a ceremony in a Leicestershire town to celebrate a fallen hero of the town's fire station. Mick Bird had been a proud Shepshed firefighter who had many of his closest friends at the town's fire station .

Today (Sunday, September 21) the Fire Brigades Union (FBU) organised an event at the station in Charnwood Road where Mick's wife Angie and daughter Tanya jointly unveiled a new red plaque.

Set into a stone at the front of the fire station, the plaque will remain as a tribute to Mick and his 21 years' service, and also a recognition of the town's respect for its firefighters, union county secretary Harry Brant told the audience at the ceremony.
