One Leicestershire area has been revealed as a hotspot for a biblical sexually transmitted infection that can cause permanent blindness. Figures from the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) show a stark divide across different areas of the county when it comes to cases of gonorrhoea.
Leicester has been identified as the area of Leicestershire with the highest gonorrhoea infection rates, with 400 diagnoses made last year. That equates to 105.4 infections per 100,000 people, or the equivalent of about one in 949 people catching the STI.
The city's rate is significantly higher than other parts of Leicestershire. Charnwood recorded the next highest rate at 71.3 infections per 100,000 people. North West Leicestershire followed with 64.4 per 100,000, according to the data.
