(WENY) -- People looking to try their hand at fishing across New York state will get the chance to fish for free next weekend. The Department of Environmental Conservation announced that Saturday, September 27 will be a designated Free Fishing Day.

No freshwater fishing license is required to participate.

The date coincides with National Hunting and Fishing Day, created by Congress in 1972 to celebrate outdoor recreation and conservation. DEC officials say it’s a great opportunity for beginners to learn and for seasoned anglers to share the sport with others.

While the license requirement is waived, all other fishing regulations remain in effect. DEC offers free clinics, fishing guides, and even a rod-lending program at participating libraries to help people get started.
