The victim came across a man he did not know in the corridor of her apartment building in Westminster’s New Cavendish Street around 11.40pm on July 30.

After she challenged him, he followed her into her flat and put his hand over her mouth, trying to push his way inside.

The victim’s partner came to the rescue from inside and chased the stranger off.

Detective Constable Chunjie Zang, from the Met’s Central West Borough Command Unit, said: “This was a highly alarming incident, which has left the victim and her family in distress.

“Nobody should face such a threat in their own home.

“We can confirm that no similar incidents have been reported in the area, but we are determined to bring the perpetrator to justice.
