Ryan Routh, a 59-year-old man, has been found guilty of attempting to assassinate Donald Trump during his 2024 presidential campaign. Following the verdict, Routh attempted to stab himself in the neck with a pen in the courtroom.

Prosecutors revealed that Routh made 17 trips to Trump's West Palm Beach golf course to plan the attack. He faced five criminal charges, including attempted assassination of a major presidential candidate, possession of a firearm in furtherance of a crime of violence, and assaulting a Secret Service agent.

The incident occurred on September 15, 2024, when Routh hid in the bushes with a rifle as Trump’s golfing party approached. After a brief deliberation, jurors returned a guilty verdict on all counts, and Routh now faces a potential life sentence.

Prosecutors detailed Routh's extensive planning, which included purchasing a military-grade weapon, researching Trump's movements, and using a dozen burner phones to avoid detection. This assassination attempt came just nine weeks after Trump was shot in the ear at a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, by 20-year-old Thomas Crooks. During that incident, eight shots were fired, with one bullet grazing Trump's ear. Crooks was subsequently killed by Secret Service counter-snipers.
