There is a new opportunity taking shape in Covington to turn vacant or abandoned properties into affordable housing.

The centerpiece of the plan is how to best make use of the hundreds of vacant lots and abandoned buildings in the city. Mayor Ron Washington says those underutilized spaces can be converted into affordable housing.
"That something is not to keep on doing the same thing, which is mowing vacant lots, which is trying to keep abandoned buildings afloat. It's turning it over to the private market, to the nonprofit market, to get our families from Covington in there," Mayor Washington said.
