EVANSVILLE, Ind. (WEVV) — We have now learned the identity of an Evansville Police Department officer who was injured in a shooting on Sunday.

Around 1:30 a.m. Sunday, police said they spotted a stolen vehicle at Rally's on Virginia Street, and that two suspects fled as they approached it.

One of the suspects, 18-year-old Jailani Chew, opened fire on the officers, striking one. Chew was also shot in the exchange of gunfire.

During a press conference on Monday, Mayor Stephanie Terry said the EPD officer who was shot was Officer Sam Taylor.

According to EPD Chief Philip Smith, at least two of the rounds fired by Chew hit Officer Taylor, with one grazing him on the side of the head and the other striking him in the upper arm.
