Dearborn — When a car mowed down a 15-year-old Fordson High School student last December at Ford and Schaefer roads, critically injuring her, it spotlighted a collision of dangerous driving problems that are prevalent in Dearborn.

The driver, then 19, seemingly sped up to run a red light just as the crosswalk signal changed to "walk" for the girl before the early-morning crash on Dec. 20, said Dearborn's police chief, and he had tints on his windows and front windshield. The driver, Mahdi Bitar, now 20, was sentenced late last month to one year in prison and three years' probation after pleading guilty to reckless driving.
