OMAHA, Neb. —
For more than three hours Tuesday afternoon, Omahans told City Council members how they feel about an ordinance from Councilmember Brinker Harding that would ban encampments on public property.
The public hearing ended after about three hours and 20 minutes. In total, the council spent about four hours on the issue.
With a time limit of three minutes each, three people supported the ordinance, but the vast majority spoke in opposition.
Case workers from outreach organizations, representatives from homeless shelters, Omaha's homelessness services coordinator working in the mayor's office, and others were among opponents.
A member of Douglas County Sheriff Aaron Hanson's staff read a letter in support from the sheriff.
