OMAHA, Neb. (WOWT) - The Omaha Fire Department responded to a fire in a vacant building early Wednesday.
The fire started just after 1 a.m. Wednesday in a building at the corner of 72nd and Farnam streets.
Firefighters tell First Alert 6 on the scene when they arrived, they found heavy smoke and flames coming from the second floor. A second alarm was issued.
OFD Battalion Chief Coby Werner says crews ran into some problems while fighting the fire. It took about 50 minutes to get the fire under control.
“We did note that the roof was kind of spongy, getting soft. We had crews up on the roof trying to get a ventilation hole cut,” Werner said. “They called crews down from the roof just because the amount of heat and fire that was on that second floor just under the roof.”
