FERRISBURGH, Vt. (WCAX) - This day in history takes us to Lewis Creek in North Ferrisburgh.
On September 24, 1990, the first chemicals were applied to control sea lamprey.
The goal was to reduce the population of the parasitic eel-like fish in Lake Champlain, which were decimating the trout and salmon population.
The program, endorsed by state and federal wildlife officials, was condemned by environmental groups who worried about other harm to the ecosystem.
The program continues today and is credited with restoring native populations of sport fish.
