VERMILLION PARISH, La. (KLFY) -- Today, Vermilion Parish honors the 20th anniversary of Hurricane Rita.

The storm made landfall on Sept. 24, 2005, leaving lasting devastation across the Gulf Coast. Leaving homes, livelihoods, and lives lost as floodwaters and winds reshaped communities.

In a statement, the Vermilion Parish 911 Communications District reflected on both the tragedy and the resilience that followed.

“The scars of that storm are still felt today,” the post read, “but the courage and determination shown in those days continue to define the spirit of Vermilion Parish.”
