ROSELAND, La. —

The Environmental Protection Agency has recovered more than 1.5 million gallons of oil from the Smitty's explosion site.

According to the EPA, efforts continue as crews work to contain oil in the Tangipahoa River and four contaminated ponds. Advertisement

The agency is using booms in the waterway, and crews are actively testing seafood.

In addition to the river, the EPA is concentrating efforts on four ponds that have a large contamination of oil.

The process involves pumping out the oil while attempting to leave as much water as possible, although a substantial amount is being removed.

The cleanup is also being affected by weather conditions, as agents have to work with the challenges posed by rain and rapidly changing conditions.
