RALEIGH, N.C. (WTVD) -- Humberto formed Wednesday in the central Atlantic Ocean, about 550 miles east northeast of the northern Leeward Islands, according to the National Hurricane Center .
The storm strengthened into a hurricane Friday morning with maximum sustained winds of 75 mph. It is not a direct threat to the US, but it could rapidly intensify and grow into a Category 3 or greater major hurricane this weekend as it tracks northwest, most likely staying west of Bermuda by early next week.
Humberto is the eighth named storm of the Atlantic hurricane season.
