CHICOPEE, Mass. (WWLP) - Two new human cases of West Nile virus have been confirmed in Massachusetts, health officials announced.

The Massachusetts Department of Public Health reported that a woman in her 60s from Middlesex County and a man in his 50s from Suffolk County have been exposed to the virus through mosquito bites.

Dr. Sundeep Shukla, Associate Chief Medical Officer at Cooley Dickinson Hospital, emphasized the importance of taking precautions against mosquito bites, particularly at dusk and dawn.

The recent cases bring the total number of West Nile virus infections in Massachusetts to eight this season.

State health officials have identified Eastern Massachusetts as an area with high risk levels for the virus, although they noted that these do not impact the local area direct
