SUNSET PARK — Blue Horizon Sailing (BHS), a nonprofit dedicated to expanding access to sailing and environmental stewardship for all New Yorkers, is looking to make Sunset Park its new waterfront home.

BHS offered local residents and visitors its first free Community Sailing Day on Sept. 15 with tours departing from the 19th Street Pier.

The sailings, led by experienced captains and volunteers, lasted roughly 60 minutes, looping through calm harbor waters with views of the Statue of Liberty and Red Hook. Participants learned basic sailing skills and sailing terms, and many experienced their first chance to “drive” the boat.

The sailings were conducted in Pearson Ensigns, 22-foot fiberglass keel boats with large, well-protected, comfortable cockpits. Each boat was skippered by an expert
