RUTHERFORD COUNTY, N.C. (WSPA) -- A bridge is closed for the foreseeable future after being hit by a truck's cargo on Monday morning.

Officials with the North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) said a tractor-trailer hauling a cargo container hit the U.S. 64 bridge over U.S 221.

The bridge was closed immediately as inspectors confirmed that the .bridge could not carry traffic.

Crews said the hit dislodged part of the bridge's girder, the main horizontal support for the structure.

NCDOT leaders said drivers moving in both directions on the highway will need to take a detour around the bridge.

As of Monday night, those traveling on U.S. 221 can drive under the bridge.
