PORTLAND, Ore — Neighbors have noticed a slight uptick in activity near the South Portland Waterfront U.S. Department of Homeland Security facility, also known as ICE, since President Donald Trump announced this weekend that he was sending National Guard troops to help protect ICE sites in Oregon.

They said the yelling and crowd size have increased, but so far, the protests have remained relatively peaceful.

Some Portland residents said they have received texts and calls from out-of-state friends and relatives asking whether the city is under siege. A few even came to the neighborhood to witness the protest firsthand.

The Portland Police Bureau said officers arrested two people on separate assault charges Sunday evening at the site.
