LANSING, Mich. (WILX) - The Michigan Public Service Commission has approved a natural gas rate increase for Consumers Energy to improve the safety and reliability of its gas pipeline system.

The new rates, effective November 1, will add about $4.44 (6.88%) to a typical monthly residential bill for customers using 75 ccf (hundred cubic feet) of gas.

Consumers Energy is allowed to raise rates by $157.5 million, over 36% less than the $248 million it initially requested (later reduced to $217 million).

Key investments approved include:

$208.9 million for the Enhanced Infrastructure Replacement Program, replacing high-risk gas pipelines prone to leaks or service interruptions.
