SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) -- Cameras are helping Sioux Falls Police find stolen vehicles while the thieves are still inside, Police Chief Jon Thum said during Tuesday's semi-annual crime update.

From January through August, police found 23 stolen vehicles using the real time information (RTI) center and its software, Thum said. "We were able to make an arrest with the people inside the vehicle," he said.

The RTI uses software and series of city cameras, including license plate recognition software to help investigate crimes in real time. The RTI center is staffed part time but could grow in the future, Thum said.

"I believe in getting a foothold," Thum said of RTI. When the foothold is established, the program can be expanded, he said.
