Houston ISD has terminated or reassigned nearly 450 employees amid ongoing enrollment declines.

The changes include cutting 160 uncertified teachers and 54 staff members as well as reassigning 232 teachers who are both certified and uncertified.

In a video announcement Monday, district spokesperson Trey Serna called the process "standard."

"Every school year, districts go through something called staff leveling to align teachers with student enrollment," Serna said. "Some schools grow while others shrink and this is a standard process that ensures the most effective teachers are leading our classrooms while keeping disruption to schools at a minimum."
