GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — Teachers and administrators across Michigan will take attendance a little more carefully Wednesday as the state tallies up exactly how many students each district is teaching.

The end result will determine how many pupils each district gets to count for per-pupil funding, which accounts for almost half of a district’s state allocations.

“It’s count day,” Luke Stier, director of communications for Grand Rapids Public Schools, told News 8. “Ninety percent of our state, per-pupil funding is based on attendance in October first. So, we want to make sure our scholars are in school.”

The remaining 10% comes as the product of a blended total with a second count day in the spring, when districts typically have a few more students.
