COLUMBUS, Ohio—The first phase of Ohio’s latest congressional redistricting process ended in gridlock Tuesday, with increasing signs that Republicans intend to wait out the process so they can redraw the state’s 15 U.S. House districts without Democratic support.
Tuesday was a state constitutional deadline for the Republican-controlled legislature to pass a map with bipartisan support. However, as a joint legislative redistricting committee wrapped up its work, the panel’s Republican co-chair said his party hasn’t even put together any redistricting plan yet.
Right now, Republicans control 10 of Ohio’s 15 U.S. House districts. But they are expected to ultimately pass a new redistricting plan that’s designed to help their party win 12, if not 13, seats next year.
