Lake Erie Transit will begin a trial program being tested across Michigan this month that will enable riders to pay fares with their smartphone.
The program, called Michigan Mobility Wallet , is being tested across the state, according to a community announcement.
The app allows users to add funds to a digital wallet, which can then be used to pay for bus fares. Buses are equipped with a device that can detect the rider's fare status, even if the phone is inside a purse, backpack or pocket.
Jeffrey Hensley, Lake Erie Transit general manager, said Lake Erie Transit is the only Michigan transit system testing the app for fixed route use.
“We’re very proud of that,” Hensley said in the announcement.
