Wakefern Food Corp. has finalized its purchase of Morton Williams supermarkets, an acquisition that combines two family-owned grocery businesses with deep roots in the Northeast.
According to a press release, the New Jersey-based Wakefern will retain the Morton Williams name, and a wholly owned subsidiary will operate the 17 stores included in the deal. Fifteen stores are in Manhattan, one in the Bronx, and one in Jersey City.
“When a brand is so embedded in the community, it’s essential that we preserve that legacy,” Wakefern President Mike Stigers noted in the release. “Wakefern brings the scale and support to help independent operators compete and grow while retaining their local roots that made them successful.”
