A state legislator from St. Louis has been slapped with a $1,397 fine for not paying his bills to the Metropolitan Sewer District.

The judgment was entered Wednesday against state Rep. Marty Joe Murray by Associate Circuit Judge Michael R. Dauphin. Murray had failed to appear in court for a hearing, according to court documents.

The delinquent amount on Murray's account was $1,215, with the remainder of the judgment amount being $182 in attorney's fees.

Reached Monday by telephone, Murray declined to comment.

Murray, a Democrat, is a member of the powerful House Budget Committee, which determines how state government spends $50 billion in tax dollars.
