WACO, Texas — A person died Sunday while participating in the Ironman 70.3 Waco , often referred to as the Waco Triathlon, according to event organizers.
The event’s Facebook page announced the news Sunday night.
According to the post, the incident occurred during the swimming portion of the race. The athlete received immediate medical attention in the water before being taken to a nearby hospital, where they later died.
“We send our deepest sympathies to the family and friends of the athlete and will continue to offer them our support as they go through this very difficult time,” the statement reads.
Event organizers also thanked first responders for acting quickly.
