PORTSMOUTH, Va. — Portsmouth police have reopened Washington Street after taking a suspect into custody.

Earlier Monday, they urged the public to avoid the 300 block of Washington Street while they were "engaged in a tactical situation" while they attempted to take the suspect into custody. They added that nearby residents were being evacuated from the area as a precaution.

The 300 block of Washington Street includes the stretch of the street from Crawford Parkway to Glasgow Street.

Police said the suspect, 38-year-old Cordero Taylor, was taken into custody without incident. Taylor was taken to a local hospital for treatment and will be taken to jail after release.
