Premier Doug Ford has responded to more than 20 Ontario mayors in their plea to compromise and let them improve their automated speed cameras , rather than scrapping them altogether.
“The answer is no,” Ford said in a letter sent to mayors on Tuesday. “Our government is banning this municipal cash grab once and for all,” he wrote.
“In its place, we are installing proven and proactive safety measures that are 100 per cent effective at slowing drivers down, including roundabouts, speed bumps, improved signage and other traffic-calming measures in school zones. The only thing municipal speed cameras are 100 per cent effective at is taking money from hard-working people.”
Ford announced last month that his government plans to table a bill once the legislature returns on Oct. 20
