SMITHFIELD, N.C. (WTVD) -- A person lost their life after getting hit by a train Tuesday morning in Johnston County.

Around 5:15 a.m., a CXS train hit a person who was on the tracks near Shelter Way in Smithfield, the railroad company said.

Police responded and the person was pronounced dead at the scene. Their identity has not been released.

There were no other reported injuries.

"CSX extends its deepest sympathies to everyone impacted by this tragic incident and will continue to support local law enforcement as they complete the investigation," the company said in a statement.

This is the second time this week a person was hit and killed by a train in Smithfield.
