A man was bitten twice on the calf by a shark at a popular surfing spot off South Australia’s coast.

The surfer aged in his 50s was attacked at The Sewer surf break in D’Estrees Bay, on Kangaroo Island’s southern shoreline about lunchtime on Tuesday.

He was bitten twice in the calf by what was believed to be a bronze whaler shark.

It’s thought the shark was chasing a seal through the bay when it turned on the surfer.

The man managed to get himself to shore safely and drove himself to hospital where he underwent surgery.

He is recovering and in a stable conditon.
