PHOENIX — An Arizona man sentenced to prison for aggravated assault has had his conviction vacated by the Arizona Supreme Court and granted a new trial.

John L. Brown was found guilty in Pima County Superior Court of assaulting someone with a microphone stand during an altercation in the defendant's bedroom.

In a ruling released Tuesday, the high court overturned his conviction after determining the trial court should have properly instructed the jury on Arizona's self-defense laws.

The incident occurred in 2021 at a condo Brown resided at with his long-term partner and the couple's two children. Brown had concerns about a neighbor who had previously lived with them.
