HAGERSTOWN, Md. (DC News Now) -- The City of Hagerstown is considering a proposal for a new shelter to accommodate the unhoused.
But the proposal is getting pushback from across the Maryland border.
During the pandemic, financial services giant Citigroup left its multi-acre corporate campus north of Hagerstown vacant. The property sits right on the Maryland side of the Pennsylvania state line.
There is talk of converting the property into a "crisis center" for those needing social services, including a place to stay until they can find a home of their own.
Kamileh Scott with the Hagerstown nonprofit Horizon Goodwill said that "using vacant buildings is a perfect way to get people off the street."
