TUCSON, Ariz. (13 News) - Tucson’s streets could become more pedestrian-friendly under a proposal the city council will discuss during a meeting on Wednesday.

The plan aims to update a decades-old ordinance that prioritized car traffic over pedestrians and cyclists.

The Major Streets and Routes Plan, or MS&R, would update the city’s 1982 ordinance. The proposal better aligns with current city goals, including infill development, strategic road widening, and accommodating people walking, biking, and using transit.

The timing is critical for Tucson, which was ranked as the third deadliest metro area in the country for pedestrians, according to a Smart Growth America report .
