LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Volunteers with Meals on Wheels and their clients are breathing a short sigh of relief this week.

"We're upbeat. We know we've got a couple months where we know it's gonna work for a while," Kirk Kulmer said, who's been a volunteer driver for Highlands Community Ministries for about five years.

Federal budget cuts and the end of long-running COVID-19 relief funds forced leadership at the faith-based nonprofit to prepare to reduce its weekly meal distribution from 40 people to seven.

"Quite frankly, they were angry. They were angry, and sad, and frustrated, and feeling a little helpless," Troy Burden said, director of Highlands Community Ministries.
