Peter Kay has opened up about the terrifying moment he realised he needed emergency surgery after being hit by agonising kidney stones, an experience he likened to his "world collapsing."

The beloved Bolton-born comedian, aged 52, recalled the painful incident during a train journey from London to Wigan, describing how what began as a simple stomach ache quickly escalated into one of the most distressing experiences of his life.

The star of Max and Paddy revealed his symptoms started on Friday, and by Sunday his lower right back was "throbbing," leading him to seek medical assistance.

In his latest book, Peter Kay's Diary, he penned: "I didn't feel well at all, so I did what anybody would do in the situation - I looked up my symptoms with Dr Google. It was looking like a kidney stone."
