Joan Bennett Kennedy, the wife of U.S. Sen. Edward M. Kennedy, D-Mass., died Wednesday at her home in Boston. She was 89, the Massachusetts Democratic Party said in a statement.

Bennett Kennedy was married to Edward Kennedy for 24 years. She was the mother to their three children, Kara, Ted Jr., and Patrick Kennedy, the state party said. She and Sen. Kennedy were married in 1958. By 1962, she became the youngest wife to the youngest U.S. senator elected in the nation’s history.

A classically trained pianist, Bennett Kennedy’s turn at the keyboard “became her trademark while campaigning with the Kennedy family,” frequently warming up crowds with musical interludes, the state party said in its statement.
