As thousands of New Orleans voters head to the polls this weekend to decide their new leaders, Jefferson Parish only has one item on the ballot: the new mayor of Jean Lafitte, a coastal town of around 2,000 residents that's been led by the same family for generations.
But that family is now out of the running , and two candidates are vying for the position: Yvette Crain, a Republican and interim mayor since May, and Will Wyman, a Democrat and firefighter of 25 years.
The seat opened up earlier this year after Timothy Kerner Jr. won a special election for Jefferson Parish Council District 1, ending a five-year tenure in the role. Before that, Timothy Kerner Sr. served seven terms as mayor before moving to the Louisiana House of Representatives.
