PETOSKEY — A $14 million grant was included in the state budget this week that will help renovate and expand the emergency department at McLaren Northern Michigan’s Cheboygan campus.

The project will total $17 million when it is completed, with the rest of the funding coming from the hospital. Construction is expected to begin next year, with full renovations to the existing 5,000-square-foot facility and an additional 5,000 square feet of space.

Gar Atchison, the CEO of McLaren Northern Michigan, based in Petoskey, said the changes to their Cheboygan campus are a welcome sight. He says it’s going to bring the latest equipment to provide state-of-the-art care.
