PENDLETON, S.C. —

A student at Tri-County Technical College in South Carolina was flown to the burn center in Augusta after a fireball incident during a welding class, according to the college.

Karen Potter, a spokeswoman for the college, said during a welding class Thursday night, a student experienced a brief fireball incident while lighting a cutting torch.,

She said the gas had been running slightly too long prior to ignition, resulting in a flash.

"This type of occurrence, while startling, can happen in welding environments when fuel gas accumulates before ignition," Potter said in a statement.

She said the student was wearing appropriate protective welding equipment.
