In late November 2024, Judge Jefferson Griffin, in a race for N.C. Supreme Court against Judge Allison Riggs, the incumbent, filed election protests that challenged 60,000 cast ballots. After three recounts that affirmed Riggs lead, the North Carolina State Board of Elections (NCSBE) rejected Griffin’s protests. When Griffin asked the NC Supreme Court to intervene, the NCSBE moved Griffin’s lawsuit to federal court.
In May 2025, after the lawsuit went back and forth between NC courts and federal courts, the federal Fourth Circuit U.S. Court of Appeals ruled against Griffin and Griffin conceded the race. The verdict affirmed that the law had not previously required that a voter’s driver license or social security number be attached to their voter registration. But going forward for future
