OLATHE, Kan. -- The Mahaffie Stagecoach Stop in Olathe hosted the Chuckwagon Cookoff on Saturday, taking visitors back 150 years to experience cowboy-style cooking.
The event featured chuckwagon cooks, known as 'cookies,' competing to prepare the best beans, potatoes, coffee, and brisket over an open fire from the back of a chuckwagon.
"He was in charge of making sure that all the cowboys were fed," said Hoss Tillman, a Chuckwagon cook. "If the ramrod was gone looking for water holes or something, he was the next one in charge. All the Cowboys respected him. They went to him when they needed something. Whether it was doctoring or ripped clothes fixed or just to talk."
