In the decade since Santa Fe began officially recognizing Indigenous Peoples Day, the historic Plaza has been a backdrop for the holiday.
The remains of the Soldiers’ Monument, pulled down during a protest on Indigenous Peoples Day in 2020, still sit in the center of the Plaza, but in recent years, a new annual tradition has emerged and continues to grow: a powwow.
The event — organized by the Santa Fe Indigenous Center and in its third year — will come to the Plaza again on Monday. For some who attend and take part in the Honoring Native Nations Powwow in Santa Fe, the significance of the location is rooted in the history of the land as Pueblo land.
