In Manitoba, we seem to take it for granted that we will lose more people to other provinces than we will gain. That’s why it was newsworthy when the NDP government announced that Manitoba had reversed the trend of out-migration in the first quarter of this year. Manitoba showed a slight gain of 106 people from the rest of Canada.
The trouble is, the numbers were incorrect. Stats Canada revised its figures, and the final tally showed that we lost 389 people to other provinces in the first quarter of 2025. The fact is, we’ve always shown metaphorical red ink when it comes to interprovincial migration. Each year, our province sees more people depart for greener pastures than choose to move here.
