Officially, the Hamilton Tiger-Cats are a first-place team. Says so right there in the CFL East Division standings.

But what exactly does that mean?

For the second time in three games — both against desperate West Division clubs — the Ticats were absolute no-shows (especially in the first half) and lost in ugly fashion on Saturday. This time, dropping a 37-20 decision at home to a Calgary team that was winless in its previous four games.

It wasn’t just that they lost. Every team loses. It’s how they lost. Despite having a chance to clinch the East and earn a bye to the division final, they came out thoroughly flat.

“I don’t know if it was flat,” head coach Scott Milanovich says. “We just didn’t execute very well.”
